thepepperedcat said: Hi Meghan, judging from your photos, are you an art teacher? I want to be an elementary school art teacher, but I didn't got to college for that career. I have a degree in Advertising Design though. How do I go about being a teacher? I can't seem to get a straight answer on the interwebs. Thanks! And your work is awesome!
Hey bae! Thank you for the kind words about my work!
I live in NYC and am a “Teaching Artist” for several arts non profits around the city. So, officially I am NOT an art teacher. I was working in an office when I first moved to NYC. In 2007, I applied to a few teaching jobs on craigslist when that office job became unbearable to me. I ended up getting an assistant job with a great teacher named Rick Diaz at the 92nd street Y. Through that gig, I was able to get more teaching artist gigs and I’ve been doing it ever since. TBH, I don’t have a lot of money and I have to hustle some times with art gigs and babysitting.
Teaching is soooo rewarding. Introducing kids to techniques and artists and just being a good creative influence on them makes me feel really good. I would highly recommend getting into it! Go back to school. Volunteer somewhere so you can get your resume built up. Look for gigs. I may leave my classroom for the day cranky and tired but I NEVER leave thinking “that wasn’t worth my time.”
I am VERY proud of my students and their work. I get as much from them as they do from me. You can see some of my student work here: AbbeArtStudio.Tumblr.com
Here are some older comics I’ve made about interactions I’ve had with some of my students:
